About Us & History
Went Hubbard Park is named in honor of Wentworth Hubbard for his tireless commitment to furthering baseball in the Walpole community throughout his lifetime. Went’s passion for the game and for sharing it with others began as early as the 1970’s when as owner of Hubbard Farms in Walpole, he built a ballfield for his employees, enabling them to be involved in several organized softball teams.
Likewise, two of the fields at Went Hubbard Park are named after volunteers Ted Brooks and George Gage who devoted countless hours over several decades to field maintenance and building local baseball programs. Since the 1960’s, Walpole youth baseball programs along with Walpole American Legion Baseball have been run by tireless volunteers dedicated to sharing their love of the game through coaching, skills development, field maintenance and administrative work, to name a few.
The Walpole Youth Baseball Foundation was established in 2010 with the vision to benefit youths in Walpole and the surrounding area by creating an outdoor space where they are given the opportunity to share in the love of baseball and enhance their athletic abilities.
Construction on Went Hubbard Park began in September 2010 and the park opened in spring of 2011, consisting of two Little League fields and a full-size regulation field along with a large concession stand and restroom facilities.
The park drew the attention of Cal Ripken Baseball and hosted the 2013 New England Cal Ripken Regional Tournament (Division: 9 Year Old) in August 2013, a notable feat as historically a host park has their own team competing in the tournament and, in that year, Walpole did not have a contender.
The park has also been host to numerous other state and district tournaments since its establishment in 2011.
The Walpole Youth Baseball Foundation and Went Hubbard Park are committed to continuing the longstanding values of youth softball and baseball programs in the Walpole area.
On April 23, 2025, the original softball field built by Went Hubbard for his employees, located across the road from the Went Hubbard Park, was purchased and incorporated into the Walpole Youth Baseball Foundation, bringing this time-honored tradition full circle.
